A single visible light-sensitive APTES-bound ZnO nanowire (NW) exhibits waveguided red emission at the tip, which is enhanced upon interaction with a target DNA and insertion into a single cell without toxicity. The APTES-ZnO NW can be a new potent biocompatible nanoinjector, and it can also detect a biomolecule in a single cell on nanoscale.
